Renaming Renal Failure As Chronic Kidney Disease In OPD Treatment Under WBHS

Renal Failure Renaming:

The West Bengal Health Scheme (WBHS) has recently announced a significant change in the terminology for “Renal Failure.” Effective immediately, “Renal Failure” under Clause 7(1)(viii) of the WBHS will be renamed as “Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – Stage 2 & onwards.”

What is Renal Failure?
Renal failure, also known as kidney failure, happens when the kidneys can no longer remove waste and excess water from the blood or maintain the body’s chemical balance

Why the Change?

This update aligns with the international consensus from Kidney Diseases: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). The new term “Chronic Kidney Disease” more accurately reflects the progressive nature and severity of this condition.

Chronic Kidney Disease Symptoms:

CKD is a progressive, irreversible condition. However, with proper treatment and medication from Stage 2 onwards, the progression of the disease can be slowed.

West Bengal Government’s Decision:

The disease previously listed as “Renal Failure” under Clause 7(1)(viii) of the WBHS OPD disease list is now renamed “Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – Stage 2 & onwards” to improve medical management for beneficiaries.

Implementation:

This change will be effective from the date of the issuance of Order No. 99F dated 16-07-2024.
